Which Heat Pump Should You Buy?
Simply Heat · Christchurch, NZ · Heat Pumps & Heating

Buying a heat pump can be overwhelming. With a huge array of brands and products available to you, it can be difficult to decide which option is best for your home, family and budget. Heat pumps need to be two things — efficient, and most importantly, able to keep you warm throughout the winter months.

Below, we take a look at some of the options you may come across on your buying journey, and explore what they do, how much they cost, and what spaces they are best suited for.

Ducted heat pump system installed in a home
Ducted Heat Pumps

Ducted heat pumps are the most complete heating solution for your home. They are capable of heating multiple rooms without the visible mounted units you get with traditional wall-mounted heat pumps.

Are They User Friendly?

Modern Ducted systems are Wi-Fi enabled and are able to connect to smart home systems, making operation a breeze. Mitsubishi Electric offer Zone Control as an additional feature to their ducted systems, allowing users to control each room (or zone) individually. So if you want to warm up your bedroom before you turn in for the night – it’s as simple as a touch of a button.

Are Ducted Heat Pumps Expensive?

Traditionally, Ducted Heat pumps have been seen as an expensive upgrade to a traditional heat pump unit. However, this comparison is not as simple as it may seem. Ducted systems can begin around $10,000 (NZD) and increase depending on the complexity and size of the house that it is being installed into. Traditional 3 Bedroom packages from Simply Heat start from $10,990 and can be tailored and scaled to fit your home heating needs by our in house design team.

Highwall heat pump mounted in a modern living room
Highwall Heat Pumps

Highwall units are the most well-recognised form of heat pump system in New Zealand. Popular since entering the market in the early to mid 2000’s these heating systems are mounted high up on a room’s wall, directing warm air down into the room via a range of delivery functions. Brands Like Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu have been at the forefront of the segment driving popularity with popular branding campaigns from some of New Zealand’s most recognised personalities.

Pricing

Highwall heat pumps come at the most cost-effective entry point, with quality units starting from around $3,000 before installation. While cheaper options exist, you get what you pay for. Established brands like Mitsubishi & Fujitsu offer better efficiency, reliability, and customer support services.

Our Advice

Highwall heat pumps are great for heating standalone rooms. However, if you’re looking to keep your whole house warm, you will need multiple units, a ducted system or, you should look at combining highwall units with a good ventilation systems (look at the likes of Lossnay).

Floor mounted heat pump console range
Floor Mounted Heat Pumps

Along with Highwall units, Floor Mounted Heat Pumps are one of the more well-known home heating options for Kiwi homes. For those looking for more powerful heat distribution, floor mounted options have been a popular choice for homeowners looking to heat blogger spaces, like open planned living & kitchen areas.

Pricing

If you’re looking at purchasing a Floor mounted unit, expect pricing to begin around the $1,700 mark and increase depending on make and model. When purchasing, we recommend to do your research and stick to proven brands that are built for the low temperatures that the New Zealand climate presents.

Our Advice

Much like their highwall relatives, there are plenty of options and manufacturers of floor consoles. Sticking with trusted and well-know brands like Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu (Now called General) are all great options for your home.
