ULEB Wood Fires

ULEB Wood Fires

In Christchurch, regulations for wood burners have changed to improve air quality and reduce pollution. Environment Canterbury (ECan) has introduced rules for homes in the Clean Air Zone to phase out older wood burners and encourage cleaner heating options like Ultra-Low Emission Burners (ULEBs).

Wood Burner Compliance in Christchurch’s Clean Air Zone

Clean Air Zone Rules

If you live in the Clean Air Zone, the following rules apply:

  • Ultra-Low Emission Burners (ULEBs): These are approved for use in all homes within the zone.
  • Low Emission Burners (LEBs): While new LEBs cannot be installed, existing ones can be used for up to 20 years after installation.
  • Older Burners and Open Fires: Open fires and older wood burners that do not meet current emission standards are not allowed.

Why The Changes Are Happening

Canterbury’s winters have historically seen poor air quality, largely due to smoke from traditional wood burners. These burners release fine particles (PM10) that harm health, especially for people with respiratory conditions. The goal is to replace outdated burners with cleaner alternatives, such as ULEBs, to create healthier air for everyone.

What You Should Do

  • If installing a new fire you will need to ensure it is an approved ULEB model.
  • Check Your Burner’s Status: Use ECan’s Solid Fuel Burner Database to see if your burner complies with current regulations.
  • Plan for Replacement: If your burner is non-compliant, you are likely to be notified by Environment Canterbury

Choosing a Compliant Heating Option

The right heating system for your home will depend on its size and location. For properties in the Clean Air Zone, ULEBs are the best option to meet the regulations. Several local manufactures offer approved models designed to work efficiently while meeting strict emission standards.
